TAJIKISTAN: What Happens When Rituals Aren’t Enough?
Tajikistan is one of the places where millions of people still have very limited access to the gospel. The Tajiks are an unreached people group of more than twenty million people, living mainly between Tajikistan and Afghanistan. Most are Muslim, and many have never had the opportunity to know Jesus.
Clara has been unable to walk for more than twenty years, and she is now facing kidney failure. Her family has sought healing through different practices of their faith, including the use of Zamzam water, which comes from a sacred well in Mecca. Yet Clara remains sick and afraid of dying.
During a visit, Marissa —a nurse and Reflejo missionary— came to care for her wounds. As she cleaned them, Clara opened up about her fear of death. Marissa shared with her about Jesus and about a hope that goes beyond the rituals that have not brought relief. Clara listened carefully and remained open to continue learning about the God who sees her and does not leave her alone in her pain.
Stories like Clara’s remind us why the Tajiks need the opportunity to hear the gospel. This is why LATE —Latinos Reaching Tajiks with the Gospel— was created, a Reflejo ministry that seeks to mobilize the Latin American church to pray, get involved, and bring the message of Jesus to the Tajiks.
